Avoid Confrontations in the Workplace

Emotions are bound to get out of hand when you are in the office setting. Normally, a lot of people have a hard time separating emotion from professional career. A lot of factors can be traced as to why this occurs, namely:
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Conflict of Interest
- Personal Vendetta
- Competition
Taken separately, these are the normal things you would find as reasons behind such although many people would deny it. Some may call it a psychological incapacity to manage their career to which the age factor and position play an important role as well.
One thing about being in the workplace is that people vying for some form of accomplishment or recognition will always be present. Everyone found in the corporate setting will always be aiming for something and to be able to achieve that, the pressure to attain that may not necessarily be easy to handle.
Conflicts will be normal although there has to be a defining line on how you can separate it from getting out of hand. Shouting matches or even resorting to dirty tactics such as spreading rumors are just among the things to expect to which many would call as office politics. If you get caught in between such a dilemma, chances are you will be looking for manageable solutions to avoid it.
As far as career is concerned, this highlight of their career may not be a good way to attain goals as far as climbing the corporate ladder is concerned. While many ignore it, it is apparent that if they allow emotions to rule their personality, it can also be a big blow to aspirations like perhaps holding key positions for an organization now and in the future.
Stop Contesting Your Salary
Imagine yourself in the standard office setting where clerks and rank and file staff find themselves close to a market-place like environment. Most of them focus on doing their job individually, wanting to finish their daily tasks at the earliest possible time. Others on the other hand choose to take it easy since finishing it ahead of time may lead to being given additional tasks without additional pay.
For some, this may seem as a sorry sight. How can a person expect to reach greater heights with such an attitude considering that being at the bottom of the corporate ladder is only the beginning of a storied working career. Some would care while others would not. But perhaps for people, foregoing the issue of compensation for now would be a rewarding decision especially if you don’t see yourself attached to your current company for long.
Your work will mirror the type of career you will be getting. Moving to bigger job roles is not as easy and similar. The higher your pay, the broader your workload would be and perhaps this is one thing that people fail to realize when you go up, more work and job responsibilities come with it.
A person should not envy higher positioned people in the corporate world. They may seem to earn more but their time for themselves and their families become lesser. This is due to the fact that their responsibilities are now higher and normally this goes beyond the standard 8 to 5 working hours.
So for now, be satisfied with what you have. If you want to get a higher salary, take the risk. It may be something you would need to adjust more to in the end.
Disciplining Yourself if You Work From Home

Normally you would hear people sounding off that working from home is better than the office setting. Perhaps there is some sense to it but one thing that should be observed here is that of discipline. At home, you can choose to work and not to. You don’t have to worry about bosses roaming around and checking on you or finding the right position to relax. In short, you get the best of both worlds when you work from home.
But while that may be a dream to most, do remember that it can also affect you as a person. Not all people see the reason as to why it is harder to work from home. It is indeed something desirable but would you be productive when you choose to work from home?
The real answer lies on the person wanting to work from home. Ordinarily people fail to look beyond what it means to work at home and the consequences that arise from it. It is something new, especially for the people who have been working in an office setting. There will be some adjustment phases and on whether you would succeed or go down with it is something that may need thorough consideration.
Two thirds of workers would prefer to work from home, feeling they would be happier and more productive if they did, a new study has revealed.
Despite this, the survey by Plantronics found that three quarters of employees are offered no flexibility on where they work from by their job, reports the Press Association.
Treat Overtime Work as Milestones not Income
There is a problem when it comes to assessing why overtime work has to be done for some people. To most, it is a means of additional income. To the superiors, it is a measure of incompetence and a sign of something wrong within the workflow process which needs to be evaluated and changed.
At times, company sections cannot help but render overtime to meet deadlines and keep the operations flowing. It is something that is critical, especially if goals are to be met by the organization. Rather than hiring additional personnel or buying new equipment such as workstations, asking identified employees to render extended hours is a need.
Overtime work done once or on an as-needed basis is acceptable. But if overtime work becomes a regular thing, it is indeed something that shows something direly wrong. Assessing each point should be done and providing various solutions to help address the solution is important.
Employees work their butt out each time. Some may like the additional pay while others may not. But as far as job scope is concerned, the best way to address flaws in a work system will be identified only with the inputs of the manpower that is caught in between these issues.
Manage your Workload Wisely
There are people who will not admit it but at times, taking in workloads even if they cannot handle them may be a problem when it comes to meeting deadlines. At first, an aggressive worker who would not complain of the tasks simply because he loves the job may end up falling short of expectations.
As far as fear of being tagged as incompetent, it does not always follow that people who beg off from additional work is categorized as complaining. We all know that the best person to measure such would be the manager or supervisor. While you may at times fall in love with your job, it is the output that is important above all.
In all, there is a fine line between laziness and trashing yourself with work such as reports and paper work. Know your limits and simply get tasks to which you can manage. It is no longer an age where more work makes you the ideal employee. It is production that counts and will get the credit and not your dedication and hard work.
Make Use of Recycled Paper

For people who need to make countless reports, paper usage is bound to be a problem if you are not that keen on making frequent revision to your work. While the company can spend a lot on bond paper or letterhead printed documents, if you are haven’t fully edited your memo or circular, print it out on a used paper which you are sure to have a lot of.
People will always tell you to read it multiple times before you print the final draft. That is why computers have screens which supposedly make it easier to edit. But for some, there is always some mistakes once the final copy is printed. This cannot be avoided and while many try as hard, reading the hard copy of the paper shows out the errors to many people’s surprise.
As far as scratch or recycled paper is concerned, offices are sure to have a lot of them. One error in printing normally becomes paper that can still be used for recycling. Actually this is a practice that is encouraged in most offices before making the final draft. You will be surprised at the savings a company can have should this practice be used, especially if people prefer to read the hard printed copy up close.
But as much as possible, try to go through your composition before printing it. That will always be the best option considering you should also consider the toner and ink cartridge you are using. One click can waste a lot of paper and ink and surely that is not a good way to conserve your office materials.
For some offices it is understandable that errors will suffice. One’s view may not necessarily be the same as the other and that is why most people would rather have another person read it. If that is the case, then use scratch paper before giving the document to your boss. It can save a lot to avoid paper waste.
Maintain a Clean Working Place

When we are at the office, cleanliness and keeping our workstations are perhaps a good thing to do. For one thing, they say a messy workplace characterizes the type of work and output an employee can do. In a sense it is true. Just imagine not being able to fix up your stuff in an orderly fashion. It shows someone who is not focused and relies heavily on cramming and can be tagged as always looking for reports and files only when the boss needs them.
It doesn’t take much to maintain an organized working place. Add to the fact that a clean working station lessens the distractions of papers and folders scattered here and there. While some claim that leaving them like that makes it easier for them to find relevant data once asked for, it still remains that anyone can improve on them if and when they want to.
It is not likewise true that such a setup can make it easier for them to find the things needed once asked. People only say that because they are used to it. Observe people who do it and time it. Thought they will find the files and folders, it takes them quite some time to do so. In short, they are pretty much disorganized.
Nothing beats being organized and knowing how to properly file your documents for easy location. People feel that with an organized setup, they will have trouble in finding stuff. But if they get used to the idea of working in a more organized workstation, productivity may go up a notch since outside that of projecting a systematic and organized image, being aware of what to pull out and where they are is certainly something that can be an advantage to the people who are aiming high in their profession.
If you want good advice, look at the people in higher positions. Rarely would you see their stuff in disarray and they make sure that all papers, documents and office paraphernalia are in place. The neater you go, the more organized and motivated you can be in the office.
Reasons for Being Given Deadlines
Time is something that is not always on the side of any employee or worker. While it depends on the nature of your job, chances are you will be having problems with deadlines once paper work starts piling up. And once you fail to meet these deadlines which are pertinent for departmental efficiency, chances are you will be bear the brunt of the blame for its incompetence.

But while this may be an issue that many would blame on being overworked, there are some people who always believe in “you can always continue tomorrow” or perhaps “the deadline is far off”. Rarely would you see people today finishing ahead of time when it comes to deadlines. They believe they have all the time in the world to kill.
Normally you would be given a week or two to compile and finish a report on something like sales reports or revenues for a certain period. Sounds easy to do but it is really getting the data that will bear the brunt of the job as well as formatting it in a way that will make your superior understand the current performance of your company for evaluation. Even the seasoned employees who are used to making reports should not take this task lightly. This is because they also have to review and make sure that everything reported is accurate since one wrong figure will be critical for the entire report.
Hence deadlines are given for workers to adjust. The last day is not the only thing important. It is how you manage your time. Do not be afraid to finish the report early since you need to review it before presenting it.
That is the whole essence of measuring efficiency. It is not about how fast you accomplish your work. It is about accuracy and making sure that you produce what the boss is asking from you.
Grab Free Seminars to Enhance Work Knowledge
One key note for aspiring career soldiers in the world today is that you may want to aim at the free training and seminars a company or client companies would offer you. Normally, such events would be for marketing and promotional purposes but just the same, the people they get to talk about certain topics such as networking or finance will be an added feather in your cap.
To most, it would seem boring. But at the end of the day, it is the certification and the new found knowledge that you get from them that is the most important thing. Hence, when you attend seminars, it would be best to keep an open mind. While some may sound familiar to you, don’t just try to play Mr. Wiseguy all of a sudden. There is more towards what they are trying to teach you.
As it is, careers are made through education. Earning a degree from college or even higher education in the form of a Masters degree is indeed impressive. But do remember that this is just one aspect of building your career. A career is nothing without hands on experience or shared knowledge from the people who have been there. These are the things you don’t usually solicit from standard education.
The point is, to work smart you have to think smart. To do so, you have to consider working with open ears. Knowledge is not something that is taken from a book. There are a lot of things you can get especially from the veteran employees you are working with. Just lend an ear and that can make a big difference in your career.
Proactiveness for an Extra Dollar
I have always believed that we can do more than relying heavily on single jobs. While they are normally routine work, once you finish the usual 9 to 5 working hours, you normally want to get home and rest. Turn on the television and have your dinner and then go to sleep. But wait, isn’t there a lot of slack time here? Why not try to do something productive for a change.
Today, you have to work smarter and approach life by maximizing your time. This is not a requirement as taking on additional workload largely depends on a person’s drive to do more. Consider the time you eat, relax and sleep. You don’t normally need more than 12 hours to do all of these things.
For others, this may vary. People want a social life to build on and perhaps majority of it would be placed here. In short, not all people would consider being proactive and managing their time as important. As they say enjoy life to the fullest. You have a job and hence are earning. But the question is “Is it Enough?”
In this aspect, telecommute work or possibly doing some extra-curricular work as perhaps trading using the web would be a good recourse. We hear people doing it in eBay while others write for a living. There are a lot of things you can do to earn the extra buck. However before you start counting the greens, do remember to define your lifestyle. Forcing yourself into it will not reap any benefits and dividends for you when it comes to managing your time wisely.
